Engine Oil — The Most Critical Fluid
Diesel engines require CK-4 or FA-4 rated engine oil (check your owner's manual). Never use conventional gasoline engine oil in a diesel. Common viscosity: 15W-40 for warm climates/high-mileage, 5W-40 synthetic for cold climates and performance builds. Oil change intervals: stock/light use — every 7,500–10,000 miles. Towing/performance builds — every 5,000 miles. Fully synthetic — up to 10,000 miles in light duty. NEVER trust the oil life monitor on a tow truck — it underestimates wear during heavy towing.
Diesel Engine Coolant
Diesel trucks use OAT (Organic Acid Technology) coolant — do NOT mix with green conventional coolant. Cummins requires SCA (Supplemental Coolant Additive) to prevent cavitation erosion of the wet sleeve liners. Test SCA levels with test strips every oil change. Duramax: use Dex-Cool or equivalent OAT coolant. Power Stroke: use VC-13 or Ford-spec gold coolant. Flush and replace coolant every 5 years or 150,000 miles. A low SCA level on a Cummins will cause liner pitting in as little as 30,000 miles.
DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)
DEF is 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. It cannot be made at home or diluted. Use only ISO 22241-certified DEF. DEF freezes at 12°F — trucks have a heated DEF tank, but stored jugs in an unheated garage may freeze. Frozen DEF is fine once thawed; it doesn't degrade from freezing. Refill when the gauge shows below 1/4 tank. Do NOT let the truck run completely out — modern trucks go into limp mode and eventually won't restart without DEF. Store DEF away from metal containers — it corrodes steel.
Transmission Fluid
Factory 'lifetime' fluid intervals are not appropriate for towing or performance use. Change every 30,000 miles if you tow regularly. Allison 1000 (Duramax): use TranSynd or equivalent — Allison is very spec-sensitive. 68RFE (Ram): ATF+4. 6R140 (Power Stroke): Mercon LV. When draining, always replace the filter and clean the pan of debris. Inspect the debris — excessive metallic particles indicate clutch wear.
Front & Rear Differential Fluid
Front axle differential: every 30,000–60,000 miles, more often if the axle was submerged. Use 75W-90 or 75W-140 synthetic gear oil. Check your axle's specific requirements — limited-slip differentials require friction modifier additive. Rear differential: same interval and spec as front. Transfer case: use the OEM-spec fluid (ATF in some, dedicated transfer case fluid in others). After any deep water crossing, immediately change differential and transfer case fluids — water contamination causes rapid gear destruction.
Fuel Filter Replacement
Diesel fuel filters are critical — they protect the high-pressure injection system. Two filters on most diesels: primary (water separator, near the tank) and secondary (high-pressure, near the injection pump). Change every 10,000–15,000 miles. Always bleed water from the water separator drain valve every oil change. Water in diesel fuel causes injector erosion and injection pump failure. Prime the fuel system after filter change: cycle the key ON/OFF 5 times before cranking to push air out of the system.
