Instructions
Remove the Old Door & Frame
Remove the door by tapping out the hinge pins. Pry off all casing trim on both sides. Remove the old door jambs by cutting through any nails with an oscillating tool and prying out the frame.
Check the Rough Opening
The rough opening should be the door width plus 2 inches and the height plus 2 inches. Check the floor for level across the opening — this is your starting point for shimming.
Set the Pre-Hung Unit in the Opening
Slide the pre-hung door unit into the rough opening from the side the door will swing away from. Center it side to side so the reveal (gap between frame and wall) is equal on both sides.
Shim and Plumb the Hinge Side
Place a level on the hinge-side jamb. Install shims in pairs (opposing wedges) at the top, middle, and bottom hinge locations. Adjust until the jamb is perfectly plumb. Drive finish nails through the jamb and shims into the jack stud.
Set the Strike Side
Close the door and check the gap between the door and the latch-side jamb — it should be consistent (about 1/8 inch) from top to bottom. Shim and nail the latch-side jamb, adjusting shims until the gap is even.
Nail Off the Top Jamb
Check that the door swings freely and latches without sticking. Shim and nail the top jamb. Score and snap shims flush with the jamb face.
Install the Doorknob & Strike
Install the doorknob or passage set using the manufacturer's template. Install the strike plate, chiseling a shallow mortise for a flush fit. Test the latch engagement.
Install Casing Trim
Nail casing trim on both sides of the door, maintaining a consistent 3/16-inch reveal on the jamb. Miter the corners at 45°. Set all nail heads and fill before painting.
