Instructions
Warm Up the Transmission
Drive for 10-15 minutes to bring the transmission to operating temperature. Warm fluid flows and drains more completely.
Lift and Secure the Vehicle
Jack up the vehicle and secure on jack stands. Ensure it's level for accurate fluid measurement.
Position the Drain Pan
Place a large drain pan (at least 2 gallons) under the transmission pan. The pan holds several quarts of fluid.
Remove the Transmission Pan
Loosen the pan bolts gradually, working from the front backward. The pan will begin to leak — let it drain before fully removing.
Clean and Inspect
Remove the old filter and gasket. Clean the pan thoroughly and inspect for metal shavings. A small amount of fine debris is normal; chunks indicate internal wear.
Install New Filter and Gasket
Install the new filter (some snap in, some bolt on). Place the new gasket on the pan — do not use RTV sealant unless specified.
Reinstall the Pan
Torque pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern to spec (typically 12-15 ft-lbs). Do not overtighten or you'll distort the pan.
Refill with Fluid
Add the correct type of transmission fluid through the dipstick tube. Check your owner's manual for fluid type and quantity. Start with 4 quarts.
Check Level and Test Drive
Start the engine, shift through all gears while parked, then check the dipstick. Top off as needed. Take a short test drive and recheck for leaks.
