Instructions
Plan and Mark
Locate property lines and call 811 to mark utilities. Use stakes and string to mark the fence line.
Dig Post Holes
Dig holes 1/3 the height of the post deep (typically 2 feet). Holes should be 3x the post width in diameter.
Set Corner Posts First
Add 6 inches of gravel to each hole, set the post, check plumb with a level, and pour concrete. Brace and let cure 24 hours.
Set Line Posts
Use a string line between corner posts as a guide. Set each post in concrete at consistent spacing (typically 8 feet on center).
Attach Rails
Install horizontal rails between posts at top, middle, and bottom. Notch posts or use rail brackets.
Install Fence Boards
Nail or screw pickets to the rails, using a spacer for consistent gaps. Check plumb periodically.
Hang the Gate
Install heavy-duty hinges and a latch. Ensure the gate swings freely and latches securely.
Seal and Protect
Apply wood sealant or stain to protect against weather and extend fence life.
