Replace an HVAC Air Filter

Improve air quality and system efficiency by regularly replacing your HVAC filter.

Tools Needed

New air filter (correct size)Marker

Tap a store to find the nearest location on Google Maps.

Find your HVAC filter — usually in the return air duct, near the furnace, or behind a vent cover on a wall or ceiling.

Note the size printed on the edge of the current filter (e.g., 16x20x1). Purchase a replacement in the same size.

Slide the old filter out carefully to avoid releasing trapped dust. Place it in a bag for disposal.

Slide the new filter in, making sure the airflow arrow points toward the duct (away from the return air). Write the date on the edge with a marker.
